These past two weeks we welcomed 25 young adults from the mountain communities we mission in to come to our home in Comayagua. The first week was missionary formation and the second was mission. We went in groups of five to various mountain communities where we visited houses during the day, drank lots of coffee in living rooms and in the evenings put on programs for children, youth and adults. Because of advent we enjoyed “Posadas”, where the community gathers in different people’s homes for a rosary and a reflection on advent and what it means that God became man.

It is amazing to have someone come to you and say “I believe in the message Jesus Christ taught. I want to live it and I want to help other people live it too.” So suddenly they are in a town like theirs, but now everything is different. Now everything from sunrise through what they dream about is eclipsed by this gigantic Presence working in their day. I can see how the Honduran mountain atmosphere helps: Someone volunteers a room in their house for us, different members of the community rotate sharing food with us, by the second day all the kids are screaming along in our songs and games, the youth are laughing at our bad life choices told in our testimonies, the adults like our catechesis because it is true and they have lived long enough to know what is not true is a waste of their time and finally the suffering where we get sick and throw up, teaching us not to judge but beg for mercy and we keep going because the love and joy we feel from living this message of Jesus Christ is worth everything to us and these new Missioners of Christ recognize this and want to share it too.
Recognizing God amongst us is “the Word made Flesh”, is Christmas and this Presence drives us to love and help those who cannot recognize it.
